Project Brief: Design and build a backless chair, that can be manufactured by CNC router.

The Beloom Stool was influenced by Mission Style furniture and architecture, which has a heavy basis around simplicity and primarily consists of wood and leather goods.

Initially, I was aiming for a traditional mortis and tenon joint, however due to the limitations of the 3 axis CNC machine I was using, a joint of this type would not be feasible. Instead I created some concepts for a joint that would accommodate the cutting radius of the tool we were using, and the limitations of the machine. From there I mocked up some models to get a feel on how the wood and woven leather would look together.

My Solidworks models really helped me visualize how the stool would be assembled. I was aiming for a joint that would require no glue, and instead have the pieces pressure fitted with a dowel for extra durability.

The pieces required low amounts of finishing once they were cut. I then hammered the joints and dowels in place, sanded, applied finishing, and attached the leather.
